It may be flippant to some, but the Bankstown Children’s Festival would have to be one of the most memorable yearly festivals for me here in Sydney. This year, on the tenth anniversary of the festival, the day was ineluctably hot (a scorching 30 degrees on the eve of spring).

I Saw the Pope!


We began our foray in Town Hall at noon, sauntering down to Circular Quay, where the pilgrims were starting to build up in mass numbers along the edge. Overhead was a computerised woman’s voice, admonishing pilgrims: “Wash your hands before you eat.”

My Sixteenth Birthday


I do not want to be 16—it’s too big a number.

But time sure does pass by quickly—I’m 16(!). My birthday was on the 24th of May, a Saturday, but activities were stretched out as follows:

  • Friday — went out for dinner
  • Saturday — watched Indiana Jones
  • Monday — friends organised a little party at school
